Love Debunked (Part 5)

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:3

We've spent this series unpacking agape — God's unconditional love — but understanding it and walking in it daily are two different things. Paul makes a striking point in 1 Corinthians 13: you can give away everything you own, even sacrifice your body, and without love it profits you nothing. Love isn't optional decoration on the Christian life; it's the substance of it.

Walking in agape daily starts with recognizing it isn't a feeling we manufacture — it's a fruit of the Spirit that flows out of us as we stay connected to the Source. 'The fruit of the Spirit is love' (Galatians 5:22). We don't grit our teeth and try harder to love; we abide in Christ, and love is the natural overflow.

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 gives us the daily test: is it patient? Is it kind? Does it envy, boast, or keep a record of wrongs? These aren't abstract ideals — they're practical checkpoints for how we treat the people in front of us, especially the ones who are hardest to love.

Agape shows up in the small, unnoticed moments as much as the big ones: choosing patience in traffic, extending grace to a difficult coworker, forgiving quickly instead of nursing an offense. These are the daily proving grounds for a love that isn't conditional on how we're treated.

The world is waiting to see a love that doesn't run out when it's inconvenient. That's the love we've been given, and it's the love we're called to give away.
