“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”
Continuing the Love Debunked series, we come to a part of God's love that's often misunderstood: chastisement. In a culture that tends to equate love with never being challenged, Scripture presents something different — that discipline is actually proof of sonship, not the absence of love.
Hebrews 12:6–8 makes the case directly: 'For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth... if ye be without chastisement... then are ye bastards, and not sons.' It's a striking way to put it, but the point is clear — a father who never corrects his child isn't demonstrating love, he's demonstrating disinterest.
God's chastisement is always purposeful, never random or vindictive. It's aimed at producing something in us — humility, holiness, dependence on Him — not at tearing us down. Deuteronomy 8:5 says, 'as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.'
This should reshape how we respond when conviction comes, when circumstances humble us, or when the Holy Spirit brings something to light we'd rather ignore. Instead of running from it, we can trust that a loving Father is at work, and that the process is producing something worth having.
Sonship isn't proven by a life free of correction. It's proven by how we respond when correction comes — with trust, not resentment, toward the Father who loves us enough to shape us.
