Picking back up from last week: chastisement is not punishment. Punishment is about paying a penalty; chastisement is about training a child. The distinction matters, because it changes how we receive correction from the Lord — not as a Judge looking to condemn us, but as a Father shaping us.
Hebrews 12:11 tells us plainly: 'no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.' The key word is 'afterward.' Discipline rarely feels good in the moment; its fruit shows up later, in a life that looks more like Christ.
This is where the enemy tries to twist our understanding: he wants us to interpret God's correction as rejection, so we pull away instead of leaning in. But a father who didn't care wouldn't bother correcting at all. It's precisely because we're loved and not abandoned that God takes the time to shape our character.
So how do we respond rightly to chastisement? Not with shame, and not by minimizing it — but by receiving it as evidence of sonship. Proverbs 3:11–12 says, 'My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD... for whom the LORD loveth he correcteth.' Let correction do its work rather than resisting it.
If the Lord is dealing with something in you right now, take heart. It isn't a sign He's turned away from you — it's a sign He's still building something in you.
